Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Understanding chemistry principles is vital in all scientific disciplines. This unit, the first of half of a program of fundamental chemistry concepts, comprises the important tools and principles of the field.

It is expected that you are familiar with the content in NSW HSC Chemistry or its equivalent to undertake this unit. If you have no chemistry background, or you need to strengthen your prior knowledge, you should complete Introductory Chemistry (CHEM100) before attempting this unit.

This unit focuses on chemical reactions and equations, intermolecular interactions, states of matter, solution chemistry, chemical thermodynamics and equilibria, acids and bases.

Whether you are planning to pursue further study in chemistry, or you are enrolled in a specific biochemistry, genetics, geology, molecular biology, physiology, soil science or zoology degree/major, this unit is a key component of your undergraduate studies.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the basic tools of chemistry (matter, measurement, molecules, stoichiometry and chemical reactions);
  2. describe, interpret and explain introductory chemistry concepts - chemistry of water, solutions and solubility, thermodynamics, states of matter, equilibria, acid base chemistry, electrochemistry;
  3. analyse and solve simple mathematical and conceptual chemistry problems;
  4. apply the theory and demonstrate practical skills in simple chemical experiments; and
  5. demonstrate skills in oral, written, graphical and numerical communication, social responsibility within the laboratory and for the environment, information literacy and team work.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
