Unit information
This unit will introduce you to the processes of capturing and examining big data to develop your understanding of its context and relevance in data-driven business decision making.
Most significantly, you will examine methods and applications for collecting, analysing, interpreting and visualising big data to obtain relevant insights for business decision making.
You will examine systems that support big data, such as cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Using examples, you will investigate data analytics approaches such as predictive and prescriptive analytics, data mining, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and deep learning.
This unit will equip you with the skills to visualise and predict trends so that you can set up metrics to measure efficiencies.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically evaluate the role of big data in driving business agility and innovation;
- review and evaluate infrastructure and information systems use in leveraging big data;
- review and critically evaluate data discovery methods, information visualisation and prediction of trends used to inform business decision makers; and
- demonstrate a grasp of the seminal business intelligence frameworks and academic theories.
