Unit information
What challenges and complications are evident in the varied struggles to decolonise Asian nations in modern history? This unit introduces post-war Asia, from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima/Nagasaki at the end of World War II until today. It encompasses the long and turbulent Cold War context, the ensuing Korean War and the struggle to decolonise, not only from Japanese Imperial power but also from varied US, and European colonial empires that predated the Pacific War.
With a particular focus on the emergence of Maoist Communism in China, the unit provides a survey of post-colonial Asia and incorporates the 1997 return of Hong Kong to China after the Tiananmen Square massacre. The unit will also consider ‘Asia in Australia’, looking at immigration and the long interaction of Asian peoples on the Australian continent.
In this unit, you Students will consider a range of broad historiographical debates in Asian history and memory during the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries.
