Sound research skills are increasingly important for career development in a wide range of professions.

This unit provides you with practical skills and experience in formulating a primary research project at all stages; from the initial stage of successfully identifying core research problems and matching research designs, to selecting and applying appropriate quantitative or qualitative methodologies.

In addition, you will learn a range of practical writing strategies enabling you to set your specific research project in the context of the academic literature and effectively present research findings.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the principles underpinning high-quality research;
  2. independently develop a coherent research design in order to organise and conduct research, with the ability to communicate this effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
  3. critically evaluate a wide range of research methods, demonstrating knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of various research methods and their associated techniques;
  4. independently model the skills, principles and protocols required in the conduct of ethical research and the potential problems pertaining to the planning and conduct of research; and
  5. critically evaluate the research work of others.
