Unit information
As an educator in mainstream, vocational or special-education classrooms, you will regularly encounter students with special needs in regards to literacy and language development.
In this unit you will learn how to identify and apply strategies and pathways which enhance the language and literacy development for these students. You will also discuss the impact of the different social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds of your students.
You will complete 25 days of professional experience in a special school, special education unit, special education development unit, or an inclusive school environment where the majority of the teaching experience is taken up with working with a student or students (child, adolescent or young adult) with identified special needs.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- plan and program a language and literacy program for students/individuals with specific needs in a mainstream or special education setting, or vocational setting, including individuals from non-English speaking backgrounds;
- develop strategies for actively engaging students/individuals with special needs in language and literacy activities, including individuals from non-English speaking backgrounds;
- assess and have a suitable repertoire of remedial strategies they can use in mainstream or special education, or vocational settings, including strategies suitable for individuals from non-English speaking backgrounds;
- demonstrate an understanding of typical child language and literacy development, specifically receptive and expressive language as it relates to physical, social and intellectual development; and
- analyse errors in spoken and or written language, literacy comprehension and expression, and suggest strategies that could be used in the classroom setting, including those to accommodate students from non-English speaking backgrounds.
