Unit information
Facilitating change can be challenging and requires counsellors to have an understanding of human nature, what causes problems for people, what constitutes change and how changes occurs. An integrative approach to counselling brings together elements of specific theories with adaptability and flexibility, recognising that to meet the individual needs of our clients, no single approach is best.
This unit provides you with a solid foundation by introducing you to some of the major theoretical schools of thought that have shaped the world of psychotherapy and the approaches to counselling they have informed.
The views they present on human nature, on the source of suffering and on what constitutes change are explored, and students are encouraged to reflect on their own assumptions worldviews.
In this unit, you will explore the importance of counselling theory for counselling development and counselling practice. You will also examine key ideas arising from different theoretical perspectives about processes of change and the use of self in therapeutic relationships. You will critically reflect on different perspectives and integrative approaches to counselling, gaining valuable insights into the importance of counsellor self-reflection, and set a foundation for case conceptualisation.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critique core counselling and psychotherapy theories and the worldviews informing them;
- demonstrate an understanding of the links between different theories and processes of change;
- explain the importance of the use of self and self-reflection in the therapeutic relationship from different theoretical perspectives; and
- critically reflect on the benefits of adopting an understanding of theoretical approaches to counselling.
