John Fraser

Biography

John is a rural general practitioner and public health physician with extensive clinical, research and teaching experience in remote and rural Australia over thirty years. John's research interests include rural health, public health, medical education, Aboriginal Health and workforce research. From 2008-2010, John was Professor and Foundation Head, School of Rural Medicine, University of New England, and Deputy Dean, Joint Medical Program, University of New England and University of Newcastle.

  • Francis Hardey Faulding Memorial Research Fellowship Award 1995 for a Research Treatise in General Practice by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.  The treatise was entitled, 'The Implementation and Application of Information Technology to improve Primary Health Care in Arnhemland 1992-94.'

Teaching Areas

  • Third year medical students in general practice, health care planning, dermatology and communication skills.
  • He has successfully supervised students in their Doctorate of Health Service Management and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees.
  • John was recognized as Australian General Practice Training Medical Educator of the Year in 2005 and has had extensive experience in postgraduate general practice education. His teaching qualifications are formalised by holding a workplace certificate IV in training and assessment.

Research Interests

John has published widely in Australia and internationally, writing over 150 research papers, conference proceedings and books. He uses quantitative and qualitative methodologies (especially phenomenology) in his research.
