Marly Smith - Bachelor of Nursing

Get in and have a go

Earlier this year Marly Smith spent time in the Macksville Emergency Department. Marly is in her third and final year of her Bachelor of Nursing at UNE. She says, “...to be a good nurse you need to be compassionate, caring, supportive, non-judgemental and willing to learn.”

Integral to attaining a Bachelor of Nursing is clinical placement, allowing students to put the theory they have learnt into practice. On placement, students gets to gain experience and develop on the skills learnt whilst at UNE in a clinical environment, under the supervision and guidance of Registered Nurses.

“I want to contribute to improving the health of others, especially my people.” Says Marly. The most valuable piece of knowledge Marly has learnt is take advantage of your clinical placements to listen, learn and gain experience. She believes that placements are the most important time to build your skills. Marly will go on her next four week placement in September.

If you, like Marly, are going on placement, you may be eligible for Away From Base funding, however it is essential that you do so six weeks prior to your placement to ensure that your application is processed in time. The Student Experience Team at Oorala is ready to help. Call 1800 622 384

To others who are looking to study as a nurse, Marly says, “get in and have a go, because I did and now look where I am! There is plenty of support along the way to help if you start feeling overwhelmed or feeling like you want to give up.” Grateful for the support she received on her journey, Marly has absolutely loved the study at UNE and is looking forward to her future career as a Registered Nurse.
