ID Cards

Your Student ID Card displays your photo and your student number. It is proof of your enrolment.

You must have your ID card to:

  • Borrow books from the University's libraries
  • Gain after hours access to computing labs including the IT Building
  • Sit for an examination (photo ID is required when attending examinations)
  • Use photocopying & printing facilities
  • Gain access to college facilities.
  • Access UNE study centre's

Student ID Cards can be mailed direct to the students residential address, mailed to UNE Sydney for collection or picked up after ID is confirmed from the Armidale campus. The collection locations are:

  • The Safety, Security & Information office on the Armidale campus located adjacent to the Central Courtyard next to Campus Bookshops (C18) or
  • UNE Sydney office located at 211 -213 Church St, Parramatta

Note - Please allow 14 days for delivery of ID Cards, especially when you have nominated for the card to be mailed.

Applications for a Student Identification Card cannot be made by Email or Fax.

The certified documentation must accompany on-line applications where the student has elected to have the card mailed to them. This includes ID cards where the student has elected to have the ID Card mailed to the UNE Sydney office where the card is then to be collected by the student.

Those students collecting their ID Card from Safety, Security & Information in Armidale must produce either an

in order to obtain the card. Students who do not provide these proof of identification documents to Safety, Security & Information in the Armidale Office when calling in to pick up their ID Card will not be issued with an ID Card until they do.

Resuming or Continuing Students

Note - the office manager at each residential college will advise & authorise the ID Card office to place swipe card access on each student card for their residence.

Resuming or Continuing students requiring an update sticker can do so by emailing idcard@une.edu.au Requests must include the Students Full Name, Student Number & current mailing address. ID Cards have a 3 year expiry date.

Intensive Schools Attendance

It is essential for all students attending Intensive Schools to obtain a Student ID Card.

Student ID Cards can be applied for on-line & either mailed out or collected in person. The collection locations are either:

  • The Safety, Security & Information office on the Armidale campus located adjacent to the Central Courtyard next to Campus Bookshops (C18) or
  • UNE Sydney at our Parramatta office located at 211 -213 Church St

Note - Please allow a minimum of 14 days for processing & delivery of ID Cards, especially when you have nominated for the card to be mailed.

Obtaining Your Card

Pick up your card in person:

  • Apply on-line at Student ID Card Application Form
  • When electing to collect your ID Card from the Armidale campus only a passport photo needs to be uploaded at the time of the on-line application (see passport photo requirements)
  • Upon collection of your ID Card you must produce either an Australian Drivers Licence or Proof of Age Card or valid Passport in order to obtain the card.
  • Students who do not provide one of these proof of identification documents when they call in to collect their ID Card will not be issued with their card until they do.

Receive your card by mail:

  • Apply on-line at Student ID Card Application Form
  • You need to select in the application that you would either like to have your ID card sent to your residential address or have it mailed to UNE Sydney where you will call in & collect it.
  • When electing to have your ID Card mailed (Residential address or UNE Sydney), you must provide a certified copy of either an:

If you require access to a building via the Cardax swipe card system, please complete the Electronic Access Request Form & have your unit coordinator scan & email it to security@une.edu.au or place it in the internal mail addressed to ID Cards, Safety, Security & Information, Union Complex (C18), for action. Please allow 24 hours for your access to be placed on your card & note that requests are only processed during business hours.

Note - the Office Manager at each residential college will advise & authorise the ID Card office to place swipe card access on each student card for their residence.

Replacement of ID Cards

Students, Staff & Contractors are provided with one ID Card during the course of their degree / employment / contract with UNE free of charge.

If your ID Card is either lost, stolen or damaged please advise Safety, Security & Information by emailing security@une.edu.au so the card can be cancelled. This reduces the risk of someone using your card to access buildings under your name.

Stolen cards must also be reported to the Police via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. A new ID Card will be issued free of charge when a Police Report number is provided to Safety, Security & Information.

To obtain a replacement student card (where a police report number is not provided) you will first need to pay a $10 replacement fee* on line. Once payment has been received, Safety, Security & Information will re-print a new card & then contact you to advise either its ready for collection or its been dispatched to you in the mail. .

Travel Concessions

Student Travel Concession

A Student Travel Concession is only available to full time internally enrolled students.

Students who require a Transport Concession Card must complete a Transport NSW Travel Concession travel Application Form available from the Safety, Security & Information office located in building C18 adjacent to the Central Courtyard next to Campus Bookshops.

Once your enrolment status is checked and verified by UNE, your details are then sent to Transport for NSW & placed on their eligibility register. Please allow 2 working days for Transport for NSW to receive this information from UNE.

Once Transport for NSW has your eligibility details, it's time to apply for your Student Concession Opal Card via the Opal Card web site or by calling 136725.

International students must have their eligibility verified by the UNE International Office (E21) before a Travel Concession will be issued.

Opal Cards

The Opal card is a free smartcard ticket that you load value onto and keep for travel on all public transport in Sydney, and the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

The University of New England is a participating tertiary institutions in NSW. To apply for an Opal card you must first give your consent to UNE to share your details with Transport for NSW. To find out more about the Opal card & student concessions visit the Opal Card web site.

Contractor ID Cards

Before a Contractor can obtain an ID Card they must complete the UNE Contractor Induction found on the Contractor Web Page. Don't forget to print off the Certificate of Completion. The contractor induction also includes the COVID 19 Return to Campus Induction.

Once you have successfully completed the Contractor Induction you can then complete the Contractor ID Card form, have it signed by your Project Manager then submit it to either of the Safety, Security & Information Offices, Union Complex – Bistro Area (C018) or Campus Safety Centre (B89). Please ensure you take with you :

If all is in order Safety, Security & Information will then take your photograph & issue you with the ID Card.

Contractors engaged by our Parramatta, Taree & Tamworth campus can provide a passport size photo to their Project Manager along with their application who will then submit it to Safety, Security & Information on the contractors behalf.

There will be a $10 replacement fee for lost or damaged cards. Damaged cards must be returned to the Safety, Security & Information office located adjacent to the Central Courtyard next to Campus Bookshops (C18) or the Campus Safety Centre (B89) for cancellation. Lost & stolen cards are to be reported to security@une.edu.au. Stolen cards are to be reported to the Police via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. A new ID Card will be issued free of charge when the Police Report number is provided.

You may require access to a building or buildings via the Cardax swipe card system. If this is the case please complete the Electronic Access Request Form and have your Project Manager sign & email it to security@une.edu.au. Please allow 24 hours for your access to be placed on your card & note that requests are only processed during business hours.

The expiry date of Contractor ID Cards is set to 12 months from the completion date of your on-line contractor induction. This means that all electronic access via the cardax system will cease to be active on your card on this date. To re-activate swipe card access simply complete the UNE on-line UNE Contractor Induction again & take the certificate of Completion to either of the Safety, Security & Information Officers & they will reinstate access on your card for a further 12 months.

Staff ID Cards

To obtain a staff card you need to complete the Staff ID Card Application Form & have it signed by your manager or supervisor. You also need to complete the COVID 19 - Return to Campus - Staff Induction & print off the certificate. Once completed, you need to submit both forms to the Safety, Security & Information office (C018) located adjacent to the Central Courtyard next to the Campus Bookshop. You are also required to provide either:

Casual Staff

In addition to the information provided under Staff ID Cards, casual staff should know that their ID Cards, unlike permanent & fixed term staff is not ongoing. Casual staff have a fixed expiry date which is the same as the expiry date on your UNE employee contract.

If your employment contract is either extended or a new contract is entered into the electronic expiry date on your Staff ID card will be updated accordingly. However, on occasions information in relation to contract changes does not flow through to Safety, Security & Information in time & as as result building access may be restricted. If this occurs please contact Safety, Security & Information or phone them on 6773 2099 or call into their office & they will provide what ever assistance they can to resolve the matter.

If your employment is converted to a permanent or fixed term status please also advise Safety, Security & Information so that your card, and access, can be updated accordingly.

Please note: Failure to advise Safety, Security & Information of changes to your employment status may result in your card being disabled and consequently access to your place of work will be affected in the short term.

FAQ's about Student ID Cards

Do new students require a Student ID Card?

All students are required to apply for a Student ID Card.

New cards are issued once enrolment is complete/confirmed for the currently enrolled teaching period.

My student card will expire soon. How do I renew my student ID card?

All student cards remain valid for three years. After this time and your still enrolled in a course of study, you can renew your student card by requesting a renewal sticker.

Important information about renewal stickers

Renewal stickers expire after three years & expire at the of March in the year noted on your ID card/sticker. For example all renewal stickers applied for in 2022 will have an expiry date of 03/2025.

Please wait until March*, in the year your card expires, before emailing your request for a renewal sticker. This will allow Safety, Security & Information to confirm your expiry date & enrolment status for the upcoming year.

Standard process for requesting a renewal sticker for your expired student card

Please email idcard@une.edu.au with the following information:

  • Full name
  • Student number
  • Current mailing address
I'm attending an Intensive Schools on campus. Do I need a Student ID card?

It is recommended that all students attending Intensive Schools obtain a Student ID Card.

Am I eligible for a Student Transport Concession Entitlement Card?

A student Transport Concession Entitlement Card is only available to internally enrolledfull time students & replaces the old Transport for NSW travel concession foils (stickers) previously issued & placed on the students ID Card by the University as proof of concession eligibility.

  • All students who qualify for a Transport Concession Entitlement Card must first complete a Transport for NSW eligibility form prior to applying online to Transport for NSW. These forms are available from either of the Safety, Security & Information Office, Union Complex (C018) or Campus Safety Centre (B89)
  • International students must have the UNE International Office (E21) verify their eligibility with Safety, Security & Information prior to completing the Transport Concession Entitlement Card eligibility form.
  • Once eligibility has been confirmed by the University, UNE then sends Transport for NSW confirmation of this eligibility.
  • Students must then go online and apply for a Transport Concession Entitlement Card direct with Transport for NSW. Please allow two working days between submitting the eligibility form to UNE & applying online to Transport for NSW. These two days allows Transport for NSW enough time to load the eligibility data into their system.

For travel within the Opal network, you’ll need to apply for both a Transport Concession Entitlement Card and a Concession Opal card.

For travel outside the Opal network, you only have to apply for a Transport Concession Entitlement Card to travel on many rural and regional buses and NSW TrainLink Regional services.

Before you go online, (and after UNE has confirmed eligibility with Transport for NSW) please have these details handy, which will help you complete the form:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Student ID number
  • Name of institution.

You’ll need to enter your information exactly as you provided it to UNE when you enrolled.

Travel Concessions expire with Transport for NSW on 31st March each year.
