The academics attended the Calrossy Anglican School World of Careers dinner with the aim to inform and inspire students in Years 9 to 12.
The dinner is a longstanding event with students grouped at tables according to their interests and paired with relevant industry professionals. The informal approach encourages students to ask questions, seek advice and explore the career pathways available to them.
Senior Lecturer in Law, Ms Julia Day, has been attending the Calrossy career dinners for a number of years and believes this type of personal relationship building is vital in helping high school students choose a university and field of study.
“With plans for the UNE Tamworth campus well underway, events such as these are an important first step in creating awareness of the opportunities UNE offer students whilst building trust,” Ms Day said.
“By sharing our experiences, aspirations and challenges we help to create a passion for learning and exploration in these students. I was very impressed by how enthusiastic the students were and the potential they present.”
Director of Place Based Education and Research and Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at UNE, Associate Professor Melanie Fillios, agreed saying the Careers dinner underscores the importance of community engagement and collaboration in driving positive change.
“The World of Careers dinner is one way of bridging the gap between education and real-world application. Career events such as these will help to lay the foundation for a vibrant and dynamic learning environment within the upcoming university campus,” A/Prof. Fillios said. “It is one of the active roles UNE play in helping to in shape the future of education and workforce development in Tamworth.”
