“I am proud to have formalised the close relationship that has formed over the past three years between UNE and TRC as we work towards a greater UNE presence in Tamworth,” Professor Heywood said.

“The MOU provides a clear way forward and commitment to a number of joint activities, including securing an appropriate location for a Tamworth University campus and establishing UNE as a TRC preferred supplier of education and research for Tamworth and its region.”

TRC is UNE’s key partner in developing a Tamworth campus.

“We have recommenced detailed conversations around possible sites, and share a commitment to develop Tamworth as a University city. UNE has commenced a Campus Development Strategy to guide these conversations and shape our contributions to the bigger picture,” Professor Heywood said.

“There are a number of processes happening in parallel to progress this project and I am pleased that UNE, TRC and the Tamworth University Reference Group are aligned in our commitment to bring a UNE presence to Tamworth.

“Importantly, we continue to work closely with State and Federal Government to develop the project and agree the various funding contributions being made to the work.

“The objectives of UNE Tamworth have not changed, and we are committed to delivering education that meets Tamworth industry and community requirements and making university education accessible and relevant to the people of Tamworth,” she said.

In a statement, the Mayor of TRC Col Murray said the level of community support for having a university campus in Tamworth is stronger than ever.

“Council has been working for three years with UNE towards establishment of a university campus in Tamworth,” he said. “The enactment of the MOU is a significant formalisation of that close relationship and establishes UNE as a key supplier of education and research for Tamworth,” he Mr Murray said.

“There has been real progress in recent years with support and advocacy from the Tamworth University Reference Group and Tamworth Business Chamber adding real weight to the cause.

“Of course, we have also the support of the State Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson in securing funding commitments from the state government, and DPM and Federal member for New England has supported UNE in negotiations with the Federal government.

“Importantly, the work done by the University’s Vice-Chancellor and CEO Professor Brigid Heywood and her staff to progress this has been simply outstanding.”
