His Excellency Dr Siswo Pramono, Ambassador of Indonesia, will give a lecture on "Updating Indonesia-Australia Relationship".

Indonesia, the world’s fourth-largest population, the world’s largest Muslim country, and the third-largest democracy, shares a deep historical connection with Australia. The relationship dates back over 400 years when the Makassan sailors, fishers, and merchants interacted with indigenous Australians along the western and northwestern coasts. Formal diplomatic ties were established in 1949, with Australia being among the first nations to recognise Indonesia’s independence and its rights to self-determination.

Since then, the two countries have fostered deeper connections, particularly in the areas of economy, development, education, defense, and security, with Australia considering Indonesia its most important neighbour and key trade and security partner. The relationship between the two countries has been dynamic and sometimes strained by political differences and incidents.

In this lecture, Ambassador Dr Siswo Pramono, will provide an overview of the existing relationship between Australia and Indonesia, as well as discuss the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for this relationship in the future.
