A strategic approach to weed management for the Australian Vegetable Industry

Background

The UNE science group completed a 2016-2021 research project, funded by Hort Innovation, which sought to help safeguard the vegetable industry by reducing its dependence on herbicides and tillage for weed control.

The overall goal was to give growers the very best weed management practices to ensure they can continue to deliver quality vegetables to Australian consumers and export markets for years to come.

This work was based on two scoping studies conducted by the research team in this field: Weed management for the Australian vegetable industry (completed in 2014); and Sustainable broadleaf weed control in cucurbit crops (completed in 2011).

Weed Management Information

The project culminated in Australia's first Vegetable Industry Weed Manual, using Integrated Weed Management (IWM) principles.

Other resources were also produced, including priority weed management guides, written and video case studies, and weed management resources for Australia’s Chinese, Khmer and Vietnamese vegetable growing communities.

These are available from the Hort Innovation web page for the project.
