Weed Science
About Us
The primary focus for weed research in this group is weed ecology and management (particularly utilising strategies that place less reliance on herbicides), the socio-economics of weed management and the strategies for best communicating about weeds. Research projects have been spread across the grains, cotton, horticultural and pastoral industries of Australia with a focus on northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland.
Our current focus in research is as follows. Weed management in Australian horticulture: understanding the weed issues with which growers in the horticultural industry (e.g. of vegetables and tea tree) have to contend and how to best address those issues. Sub-Antarctic ecology and management: understanding the adaptations of weeds to this hostile climatic environment and how to best manage them. Fireweed control research: research and scholarship on the invasion of fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) in grazing environments in Australia with changes in climate. Resources for landholders: investigating and producing resources that meet the needs of landholders for the effective management of weeds, whether in the grazing or horticultural industries, or for lifestyle landholders. Weed ecology and management: interest in all aspects of weed ecology, e.g. seed biology and competition, across all agricultural and environmental systems that assist with understanding why weeds succeed and how best to control them. Enquiries from prospective Honours, Masters and PhD students are always welcome. We’re keen to hear from people who want to work as part of a research team, that have a particular interest in weed ecology and management.
