Contemporary Crime Trends and Crime Prevention

Abstract:
The ‘crime decline’ has received increasing attention in recent years. Significant falls in many crime types have now been recorded in many jurisdictions around the wold. This seminar will explore contemporary crime trends in New South Wales, highlighting that the local crime decline has largely been confined to property offences. Explanations offered for the crime decline will be reviewed and their relevance to the Australian context considered. More particularly, the contribution of crime prevention policies on falls in crime and the impact of these falls on sustaining crime prevention efforts will be discussed.
Biography:
Dr Clancey is a Lecturer at the Sydney Law School (University of Sydney), the Deputy Director of the Sydney Institute of Criminology and the Vice President of the Australian Crime Prevention Council. Garner was recently appointed as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer School of Humanities, Arts and Social Science at the University of New England and is a Research Associate of the Applied Criminology Centre at the University of Huddersfield.
