Unit information
Draw on your knowledge of physiology and biochemistry to establish a foundation in pharmacological principles - a core aspect of pharmacy.
Critical to understanding the pharmacology of drugs is your ability to discuss the cellular and physiological steps that are involved in their action, as they relate to the pathophysiological processes they are used to treat.
Studying this unit, you will investigate the pharmacology of therapeutic drugs used to manage disorders, conditions and diseases involving the autonomic nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, inflammation and inflammatory responses.
This unit allows you to examine the ways in which the pathophysiology of a condition can guide the identification of potential pharmacological targets.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- define and describe the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics as well as the processes by which these principles are measured;
- describe the mechanisms of action of drugs that affect the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular system and respiratory system as well as inflammation and inflammatory disorders;
- describe the core steps in the pathophysiology of selected disorders of the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular system, as well as inflammatory disorders and how this information allows identification of pharmacological targets; and
- synthesise information and communicate knowledge effectively.
