Unit information
This unit will equip you with a comprehensive knowledge of how people acquire physical skills and what this means for motor performance.
You will explore a range of factors that underlie and influence skill acquisition, performance, and the control of skilled human movement. You will investigate aspects of motor skill acquisition and development, as well as the neural, physiological and cognitive bases for controlling movement.
You will examine factors related to implementing motor learning and the implications of skill acquisition for sports coaching.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe the principles of motor learning, performance and skill, and integrate this knowledge to evaluate and design motor learning environments that are appropriate in a range of health, and exercise and sporting contexts;
- analyse techniques used for quantifying motor learning and performance, and apply these to various health, exercise and sporting contexts;
- demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical models used in motor control, learning, and skill acquisition, and apply these among various health, and exercise and sports settings; and
- describe the neuromuscular and sensory basis of motor control as they relate to motor behaviour and skill acquisition.
