Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Extend your knowledge of motor learning and control to develop a deeper appreciation of the neurophysiological basis of human movement and consider how this may change throughout the lifespan.

This unit builds on the knowledge you have gained in prerequisite units by examining the conceptual, theoretical, and applied nature of motor control and human development.

By reviewing and interpreting relevant literature, you will investigate the significance of the sensorimotor system both within typical and atypical movement contexts. You will also consider the psychosocial and functional changes that occur across the lifespan from gestation to old age.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. communicate how postural, locomotive, and/or reaching and grasping control change throughout the lifespan, and discuss the structural, physiological, sociocultural, neural and theoretical basis of these phenomenon;
  2. describe the underlying neurophysiology associated with common neuromuscular movement disorders that may arise throughout the lifespan of an individual, from conception to old age;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the neuroanatomical structures, pathways, and neurophysiological principles that are involved with sensorimotor signal transmission, and signify their importance to motor control;
  4. exhibit depth and breadth of knowledge relating to neuroplasticity and how it is applied to neuromuscular control of movement and/or motor learning; and
  5. demonstrate proficiency to collect and analyse data commonly used in motor control, and interpret these within the scope of exercise performance and/or clinical exercise physiology.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
