Unit information
Inclusive education underpins all modern classrooms, and effective teachers will successfully meet the broad range of learning needs that must be met. As a teacher of future generations, it is essential you understand major historical and philosophical issues that underpin current world practice in inclusive education.
In this unit you will investigate the world wide inclusive education movement and the appropriateness of inclusive teaching and management strategies in different classroom contexts.
You will develop your own framework for critically evaluating your practice in the light of emerging international theories, findings and trends in inclusive education.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the major historical and philosophical influences in the movement towards inclusive education, and the current situation;
- demonstrate specialised theoretical knowledge and critical thinking to critique current models of inclusive practice in terms of their relevance to particular educational contexts including the education of students with disabilities, learning difficulties or who are gifted;
- use expert judgement, and access to evidence-bases, to develop a range of inclusive classroom strategies and practices;
- demonstrate an advanced level of academic skills to relate these strategies to the students' own classroom contexts, modelling skills applicable in a professional career; and
- apply an advanced level of autonomy and specialist judgement to critically evaluate current practice in the light of emerging international trends in inclusive education.
