Unit information
This unit provides you with an introduction to the principles of mechanics as they apply to the human body, with emphasis on human movement and sports-exercise performance.
Studying this unit you will analyse both internal and external forces with respect to the human body and its environment. You will explore topics relevant to optimising performance and minimising injury risk, including Newtonian mechanics, the physical principles of projectile flight, and the functional basis of levers and movement.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- define key biomechanical terms and demonstrate an understanding of how biomechanical principles apply to human motion;
- demonstrate competency in applying relevant mathematical equations to gain an understanding of human movement;
- describe the major forces acting on the human body whilst stationary or in motion; and
- apply biomechanical principles to analyse human movement with an emphasis on performance and injury prevention and communicate scientific data and findings using appropriate terminology to a broad audience.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
