Unit information
The unit introduces you to the Australian Curriculum: English, and the NSW English K–10 Syllabus. It presents a socio-cultural perspective on children’s language and literacy development before and during the school years. The unit introduces children’s literature, and its role in the development of language and literacy, including print, visual and multimodal literacy.
You will be introduced to the importance of planning for diversity (e.g., linguistic, social, gender) in the classroom, and they develop strategies for teaching speaking and listening; reading and viewing; and writing. You will then use your theoretical understandings to evaluate classroom resources, and to design elements of a classroom language and literacy program.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of the concepts, content and structure of the English learning area (GTSD 2.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn in the English classroom, how physical, social and intellectual development interact with learning, and the implications for teaching English (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1);
- analyse language and visual resources in a variety of texts, including texts about Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and language (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1, 3.4.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies for students from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, as well as strategies that differentiate teaching for students with a range of abilities (GTSD 1.3.1, 1.4.1);
- demonstrate understanding of the role of assessment in English teaching, knowledge of English assessment tasks design, and understanding of how to embed assessment into learning sequences with links to curriculum/syllabus outcomes (GTSD 5.1.1); and
- select and organise a range of English content to create effective, engaging teaching and learning activities, using knowledge of curriculum, assessment and reporting, knowledge of how students learn, knowledge of teaching strategies, and knowledge of appropriate resources. (GTSD 1.3.1, 2.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.4.1, 5.1.1).
