Unit information
Indigenous people in Australia continue to experience intergenerational loss, grief and trauma. This unit introduces you to loss, grief and trauma in the Indigenous context and provides you with opportunities to critically examine the impact of colonisation on First Nations Peoples and the ongoing impacts of the Stolen Generations.
Studying this unit, you will explore a range of loss and grief experiences, the processes of mourning, and the impact of intergenerational trauma, common to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.
You will develop valuable insight into ways of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing loss and trauma. You will also consider individual and community approaches to healing.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of common loss, grief and intergenerational trauma experiences, and of the processes of mourning (including the impact of intergenerational trauma);
- identify and discuss ways of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing loss, grief and trauma; and
- demonstrate an understanding of various supportive interventions for loss, grief and trauma experiences at an individual, family, and community level.
