Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

As an educator, appropriately managing the classroom behaviour of your students is critical to the success of the class as a whole. Effective teaching, including curriculum rigor, engagement, participation and inclusion, are key factors in effective classroom management.

This unit will teach you a range of prevention, intervention and response strategies to manage classroom and individual student behaviours, including those with learning difficulties and/or learning disabilities. It will also give you strategies for managing students from a range of cultural backgrounds.

In this unit you will gain a basic knowledge of the motivations of your role as the teacher, the role of students, and the concept of power sharing as central to managing student behaviours. You will study the motivations of student behaviours, and learn strategies to assess, understand and respond to a range of student behaviours. You’ll also learn how to identify and respond to bullying, including cyberbullying, in different contexts and cohorts.

This unit includes 20 days of professional experience in schools.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
