Unit information
In an era of rapid innovation, with increasingly complex diseases and new diagnostic tools, an understanding of human physiology adds value to many scientific disciplines.
This unit provides you with advanced knowledge of the structure and function of the human cardiovascular and respiratory systems, exploring pathophysiological and diagnostic features of important diseases.
Key concepts include electrical activity of the heart and introductory electrocardiographic interpretation. Mechanical functions including pumping of the heart and breathing are also examined.
You will learn about the control of respiration, blood pressures and blood flow, at rest and during exercise, as well as pulmonary and systemic gas exchange and gas transport by blood.
Extend your technical and communication skills and apply your knowledge through practical experience performing and analysing cardiorespiratory measurements.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of the structure and function of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, including cardiovascular and respiratory function during exercise, and pathophysiological and diagnostic features of important cardiovascular and respiratory diseases using well developed cognitive, technical and communication skills;
- analyse and evaluate data using physiological techniques relating to cardiovascular and respiratory function, including blood pressure measurements, 12 lead electrocardiography and spirometry. This includes graphical and statistical analyses of cardiovascular and respiratory data;
- transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to health care professionals by interpreting and generating reports which incorporate analyses of cardiovascular and respiratory data; and
- apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, judgement and responsibility in order to analyse human cardiorespiratory measurements for biomedical purposes.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
