Unit information
Crime fiction is fascinating for those who love to analyse characters, human behaviour and motivations. Studying German fiction, in German, will give you a deeper insight into the structure of the language and the culture of German readers and writers.
In this unit, you will read and watch German crime fiction from the 20th and 21st centuries. The unit focuses on developing your ability to examine a literary or film text critically and to relate it to the historical, political and social context of its era.
Enhance your language skills through a detailed study of the texts and by producing your own piece of crime fiction in German.

Notes
Students with substantial knowledge of German but with no formal University qualification and students who completed their language study more than five years prior to enrolment should contact the discipline convenor to request a placement test.
First language (German) speakers may not enrol in German language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- produce a piece (written or audio-visual) of crime fiction in German at an intermediate level;
- apply advanced level language skills to the comprehension of modern German texts;
- demonstrate an accurate comprehension and interpretation of authentic German texts (written and audio-visual);
- discuss and critically evaluate aspects of culture and society as portrayed in German crime fiction, with reference to their historical context;
- recognise and interpret literary/cinematic devices, such as form, style, symbolism, imagery and narrative perspective; and
- research literary scholarship and draw on this to frame an argument in relation to a text.
