The future success of Australia’s cotton industry relies on skilled professionals who can integrate the management of natural, human and economic resources to produce sustainable cotton crops.
This unit provides you with a solid foundation in environmentally and economically sustainable, efficient cotton production.
You will examine aspects of breeding, cotton growth and development, nutrition and soil management, irrigation, farm design and cotton quality, building your understanding of the theoretical framework and principles of the cotton production system.

The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all practical/laboratory/tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent theoretical knowledge of the framework and principles of the cotton production system focussing on the natural, human and economic resources necessary to produce economically and environmentally sustainable cotton crops;
- knowledgeably discuss the use of inputs, particularly crop nutrition and water management, for efficient cotton production;
- describe the infrastructure behind the production of cotton in Australia, from plant breeding and seed production through in-field growth to ginning of the raw cotton fibre;
- demonstrate critical thinking and judgement in discussing the differences between cotton production in Australia and other countries;
- explain in some detail the management of cotton crops towards greater economic and environmental sustainability; and
- critically evaluate sources, values and validity of information in professional journals.
