Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Extend your understanding of functional anatomy and biomechanical theories by studying this unit.

Building on concepts introduced in EXSC210 Introductory Biomechanics, you will examine techniques used for measuring and describing aspects of human motion.

Using problem-based learning, you will review and interpret relevant literature to construct, apply and justify biomechanical factors that are influenced by injury, loading and ageing, with emphasis on performance enhancement and injury prevention across a range of contexts.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. define the application and technical considerations associated with qualitative and quantitative methods commonly used within biomechanics to analyse human movement;
  2. demonstrate a proficiency in performing biomechanical analysis, identifying factors that may affect performance and/or contribute to injury including the ability to correctly interpret data and communicate findings using appropriate scientific terminology;
  3. define the structural and material characteristics associated with biological tissues and demonstrate an understanding of the changes that occur with adaptations to load, disuse, overuse, ageing and other factors;
  4. demonstrate an ability to apply theoretical knowledge and technical skills to identify appropriate biomechanical methods to investigate intrinsic and extrinsic factors that are associated with neuromuscular disease and injury; and
  5. demonstrate competency in integrating knowledge and skills of biomechanics with other study areas of exercise science within an applied context.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
