Biography
After a research and management career in Africa, I joined UNE (in 1974) to teach and research in Wildlife Management, a discipline that has attracted students ever since awards in natural resource management began at UNE. Current coursework units in that area include: Australian Wildlife: Evolution, Ecology and Land-use Impacts (EM 251/561); Wildlife Management (EM 423/523); and Biological Conservation (EM 453/553).
I have supervised on-campus and off-campus research projects in wildlife ecology, behaviour and management, for bachelors (B Nat Res, B Sc, & B Env Sc), diploma (Grad Dip Nat Res), masters (M Res Sc, M Nat Res, M Sc) and doctoral (Ph D) awards. UNE wildlife graduates now serve in every national parks service or fauna agency in Australia (and some overseas countries).
In retirement I continue my career-long research interest in the behaviour and ecology of large mammalian herbivores.
Qualifications
- M.A. (Oxford University, U.K.)
- Ph.D. (Manchester University, U.K.)
- Grad. Cert. Higher Ed. (University of New England)
Research Interests
My more recent research focuses upon two major topics;
1. The behavioural ecology of brush-tailed rock-wallabies.
Rock-wallabies are restricted in their foraging to resources available within short distances of their refuges; they also compete for access to secure refuges. These traits distinguish rock-wallabies from larger macropods such as eastern grey kangaroos. I am interested in the effects that such restriction and competition have upon the activities, social behaviour and reproductive success of individual brush-tailed rock-wallabies.
2. Concepts in the behavioural ecology of large mammalian herbivores.
I have a long-standing research interest in the behavioural ecology of mammalian herbivores. My current interests are in sexual dimorphism, sexual segregation, and activity scheduling and behavioural ecology of species that differ in being tied to, or free of, shelter sites.
