Unit information
It is imperative that professional educators in Australian schools plan and deliver effective teaching and intervention for students who experience learning difficulties, have disabilities, or are gifted and talented.
In this unit you will examine current, evidence based, responsive teaching and intervention to be used in whole-class, small group and individual programs in special and inclusive contexts.
This unit includes 10 days of professional experience in a special school, special education unit or an inclusive school environment where the focus of your experience is working with students with identified special needs.

Notes
This unit requires contact with children in an educational setting. Before entering the setting all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply deep knowledge of theory and research that supports inclusive and special education for students experiencing barriers to their learning, including gifted students;
- demonstrate appropriate use of language and terminology as it relates to learning intervention for students with a diversity of needs, and when presenting assessment information about student learning needs;
- critically examine key issues and evidence bases in educational intervention in special and inclusive education and justify teaching decisions based on that evidence;
- demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge to legislative requirements and education system policies and provisions in regards to education of students with learning difficulties or disabilities, or are gifted and talented;
- demonstrate an advanced level of theoretical and research-based knowledge, and collaboration, when designing, implementing and evaluating educational intervention; and
- demonstrate an advanced level of reflective skill and planning for professional learning to better support practice in educational intervention.
