Unit information
This advanced level unit is for students who have either gained a distinction or above in a full second year of Chinese study, or have completed three years of study or the equivalent. It is also suitable for students who have Chinese-speaking backgrounds.
This unit will assist you to develop your Chinese writing ability as well as your familiarity with Chinese written conventions. Chinese and English writing style and conventions will be compared. Through various types of exercises you will learn to write texts appropriate for both academic and practical purposes, covering a variety of different styles and genres.
You will learn to write in Chinese with confidence at an advanced level of accuracy and appropriateness acceptable to a native speaker of Chinese; this includes the use of handwritten Chinese characters.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- write in Chinese with increasing confidence at an intermediate to advanced level of accuracy and appropriateness acceptable to a native speaker of Chinese (includes the use of handwritten Chinese characters);
- apply knowledge of the differences between the style and conventions of written discourse in Chinese and English;
- demonstrate competence in planning, composing and writing a set range of text types appropriate for practical purposes; and
- critically reflect on language development and choice of words and structure in further developing competence to an intermediate level.
