University culture

Returning to study or recently arrived

International students who have recently arrived and students who are returning to study share the common challenge of adapting to university culture.

If you have been away from study or research, or are new to the Australian university system, the rules, conventions, values and expectations might seem unfamiliar. Make the most of the orientation sessions run through the International Precinct, Research Services and your School. Also make an effort to attend any academic skills courses that might help you to feel comfortable with PhD research and thesis writing. These courses are provided through the Academic Skills Office. Remember that other postgraduate students can also be a great source of advice and support.

For international students, the International Precinct offers a range of orientation programs. Many of these programs deal specifically with the expectations and conventions of PhD research in Australia. They also provide the opportunity to further develop the language skills needed for research and writing at the PhD level.

International Student Services also provides excellent support on arrival and throughout your candidature.
