Study online
Most of our students choose to study online across three study periods with 24/7 tutor support* and fit study around work and family commitments. Uniquely, our online students are mostly over 30 and bring valuable experience with them. They form a community of adults juggling the same challenges and priorities and who bring their life and work experience together at UNE in order to become future-fit and better respond to a rapidly changing world.

Online study in your own country
If you would like to study online with UNE while you reside outside of Australia you do not need a Student Visa. If your course requires you to visit Australia to attend any mandatory study requirements, you would need to explore Visitor Visa options for a short-term stay.
Online study in Australia
If you would like to study online with UNE while you are residing in Australia, you will need to hold a visa (other than a Student Visa) that allows you to study. If you are unsure if your visa allows you to study, you can check with UNE's International Admissions team. If you hold a Student Visa you cannot study completely online; you must be enrolled as an on-campus student (although you can study a limited number of online units).
Some courses require you to provide documentary evidence, or interviews to support your application. The following documents are required to support your application:
- A certified academic transcript of your completed qualification.
- A completed thesis proposal form. This must be included in your online application.
- Proof of identity and citizenship. This can be a certified/notarised copy of the photo page of your passport, or another form of official photo identification that lists your full personal details including name and date of birth; for example, a foreign government identity card.
- Evidence of English Language Requirements satisfied. If you have completed a UNE-approved formal English test within the last two years, you must provide a copy of the test results with your application. Please see UNE's English Language Requirements above for further information.
Advanced Standing is credit or recognition of your previous study, work and/or life experience. This can reduce the cost and length of your studies.

If you are admitted into this course and believe you have completed the equivalent of one or more of the units in the Program of Study within the last ten years (including listed units), you can apply for Individual Unit Advanced Standing.

- You have completed a Bachelor qualification (AQF Level 7 or overseas equivalent) with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.5 in a Health or Allied Health discipline including, but not limited to:

Candidates select the major that complements the Bachelor degree upon which they were admitted to the course. The Nursing major is only available to candidates that have completed a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent Nursing qualification. The Complementary and Alternative Therapies major is only available to candidates admitted to the course based on completion of a related Bachelor degree. Please note that while no listed units in the course specifically cover Complementary and Alternative Therapies, students can focus on this is in all core units of the course.To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 48 credit points with at least 30 credit points at 400-level and not more than 18 credit points at 500-level.

Understanding Your Course Fees
Your total course fees are based on the number of units you complete, not the length of time you study. This gives you flexibility to tailor your study journey to suit your circumstances.
Here's how it works:
- Unit-based pricing - Each unit has its own fee. Visit our Fees and Costs section for detailed unit pricing information
- Advanced standing - If you're eligible for credit for previous study, you'll complete fewer units and pay less overall
- Study pace - Choose part-time or full-time study to fit your schedule without affecting unit costs
- Trimester 3 option - Students who choose to accelerate their progress by studying during Trimester 3 can do so without increasing overall costs

What are the course fee payment options?
A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is a government subsidised place in a university course. The government pays part of your tuition fees, and you pay the remainder.
If you have a CSP in either an undergraduate or postgraduate (coursework) degree, you may be eligible for a HECS-HELP Loan, which allows you to defer payment of your fees until you are earning above the threshold.
UNE scholarships are open for all to apply and offer financial help while you are studying. There are scholarships for students with high academic achievement, from rural areas, studying specific degrees, in disadvantaged groups, experiencing financial hardship, who excel at sport or want to live in a UNE residential college.
UNE offers bursaries and scholarships that can help you with the costs of studying and living in Australia.

Course outcomes
- critically evaluate literature in health, identifying gaps in existing knowledge and potential areas for future research;
- demonstrate the ability to design and conduct research, including identifying research questions and selecting appropriate study designs;
- apply a comprehensive understanding of key concepts and theories in health research, including research methodologies, data collection and analysis techniques, and ethical considerations to practical and professional issues;
- effectively communicate research findings to diverse audiences using a range of communication modes;
- demonstrate the application of research skills to address complex health needs, such as developing evidence-based policies, interventions, and programs to address professional issues; and
- collaborate effectively with peers, supervisors and other stakeholders in the health field to conduct research that can be translated into practice.
- Knowledge of a Discipline
Graduates will have coherent and advanced knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts in health services, as well as highly developed knowledge of research principles and methods, and an advanced comprehension of a specialised area of study that the student has selected to research. Supervisors will guide students to identify important resources that will be used as the basis for their research. This knowledge will then be assessed throughout the degree through a range of assessment tasks to be determined by the relevant discipline.
- Communication Skills
Graduates will have high-level communication skills, oral and written, and be able to present a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences. Guided by their supervisor, these communication skills will be developed by students when completing, for example, ethics applications, contacting potential research participants, conducting empirical and other research, and communicating their ideas in oral and written form. The honing of these skills will stand students in good stead for the workplace.
- Problem Solving
Graduates will have cognitive skills to review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge to identify and provide solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence. With initiative and judgement, these skills will enable students to adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts. Students will need to locate, evaluate and interpret information in a useful manner and will be assessed on their ability to deconstruct relevant literature and to integrate theoretical and critical approaches into their work.

Graduates will be able to recognise pertinent information and will have the advanced cognitive skills to use appropriate media, tools and methodologies to locate, access, critically analyse and interpret information. They will have the cognitive skills to exercise critical and creative thinking and judgement in developing new understanding of a subject.
- Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility
Ethical, professional and social responsibility is at the heart of health services. Students' capabilities in this attribute will be enhanced through their engagement with the research project process, peers and supervisor.
- Lifelong Learning
Graduates will have the research and critical thinking skills, as well as intellectual capacity, to enable them to continually further their learning. These attributes will be fostered throughout the honours program. Through completing the coursework and assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to, with a degree of independence, write about and discuss critical issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, will be useful in any career and are essentially lifelong competencies.
