Unit information
In this unit you will explore the research opportunities within the health and social care industry, building the skills to evaluate and communicate these prospects. You will foster a relationship with an organisation to collaboratively explore and create a research project that addresses real-world issues relating to one of four focus areas: community services, nursing, counselling or public health. Examples of topics you could explore include mental health, disability care, children and youth services, Indigenous health, health promotion.
This unit will expand your understanding of the structure and trends of the health and social care industry, and learn how to work effectively with stakeholders to explore research-based solutions in industry settings.
The ability to effectively bridge the divide between the needs of industry and academia is in high demand, and evidence-based decision making is a sought-after skill. Hone these capabilities in this unit by learning to translate organisational needs into co-created and participatory research projects and effectively communicate the benefits and limitations of research processes to industry stakeholders.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a clear understanding of co-creation and participatory research, encompassing the theoretical principles and processes involved in achieving research-based solutions to practical problems in collaboration with industry;
- explain a specific research area determined in collaboration with the student's matched organisation and articulate the importance of this topic in relation to the organisation and industry at large;
- critically evaluate the organisational context and culture of their (the student's) matched organisation and demonstrate an understanding of how these factors may impact research project development, goals and outcomes;
- identify and evaluate what roles they (the student) have in the co-creation process, analyse their relationship to the research topic and organisation, and demonstrate an understanding of how this relationship and their goals impact on the organisation's objectives, goals and industry in general;
- develop a preliminary research proposal that demonstrates an understanding of the organisation's needs and objectives, aimed to garner support of key industry/organisational stakeholders; and
- communicate effectively with the organisation, building strong professional relationships and negotiating project scope and objectives in a collaborative and constructive manner.

| Online supervised examination - Assurance Task | Yes | 30% | All offerings | Online supervised examination related to understanding the role of participatory research, co-creation and the role of industry partnerships on research outcomes. The examination will be held exam during the teaching period in which you are enrolled. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit. To pass this unit, you must attempt this task and achieve a cumulative mark of at least 50% across all assessments |
