Portal and Profiles

UNE is launching the Pure Research Portal and Pure Profiles

drawing of a world globe About the Research Portal

The Pure Portal is the web interface (front end) of Pure, providing a public view of the University's research. The Portal displays content held in Pure such as researcher profiles, publications, research projects, activities and many other content types.

This initial project is focused on making the Pure Portal public, and enabling research profiles and publications to be displayed. The project is being delivered in a phased approach over the first half of 2026.

The roll out of Pure Profiles will also be managed in stages with current researchers being supported to go live initially. The second stage will see support provided to UNE's Honorary & Visiting Appointments (HVAs) to activate their profiles followed by Higher Degree Research (HDR) Students.

Not all content types are currently enabled in UNE Pure. Project work slated for 2026 will see the Research Performance team releasing this functionality in a phased approach, and we will develop resources/support and communications for researchers around each release.

You can access the live Research Portal via https://researchers.une.edu.au/en/ or navigate from the UNE Research page.

The UNE Find and Expert functionality is also now returning results from the Research Portal.

drawing of person on computer screen About Pure Profiles

Pure profiles are your dynamic showcase, publicly displaying your credentials, achievements, publications, and other key research contributions. These profiles serve as a vital connection point, frequently used by both prospective Higher Degree Research (HDR) students and by potential research collaborators looking to find expertise at UNE. It's how your work truly gets seen and sparks new opportunities.

Your Pure profile will be replacing the existing CMS staff profile for promotion of your research activity and as such, your Pure profile is the only profile you are required to maintain going forward. Research Services copied across some data from staff profiles (only those updated in 2025) into Pure to reduce time and effort for you, but you should review and update your information in Pure regardless.

The great thing about Pure is that you are in control of what information you display on your profile, beyond our recommended minimum data. Refer to our Profiles User Guide and Sample Pure Profile for ideas on how to maximise the impact of your profile.

You can also control which publications appear at the top of your Profile. Refer to the Highlighted Content User Guide for step by step guidance on setting this up. It is important to note that  your publications must be in RUNE in order for them to appear on your Pure profile.

Researcher Resources

Research Services has prepared a number of resources to support researchers in the development of their Pure profile:

Profiles User Guide

The Pure Profiles User Guide is our key resource for researchers in entering and editing data into their Pure profile. The guide provides screenshots and detailed information to guide you through the sections, in the order of the template in Pure.  The guide also makes it clear which sections form part of the UNE requested minimum data for a profile.

Exemplar Profile

The Sample Pure Profile illustrates key components of the Profile and highlights where certain content appears. You can view your profile once you have saved changes in Pure, either before or after you have set visibility of your profile.

Highlighted Content

Highlighted Content allows researchers to select particular publications that they want to appear at the top of the publications list within their profile.

Refer to the Highlighted Content User Guide for specific instructions on how to highlight your content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to update my existing Staff Profile on CMS?

No, you don't need to maintain the information on your Squiz/CMS staff profile. Eventually the research components on staff profiles will be switched off. Your Pure Profile is the only profile that you need to maintain going forward. Some data from staff profiles (updated in 2025) was copied to Pure. Research Services will also ensure the Web Team have relevant information to maintain CMS staff profiles going forward.

Do I need to add my publications to my Pure Profile?

No, you don't need to manually add research outputs/publications to Pure.  Your publications must be in RUNE to be visible in Pure. If you have publications missing in Pure and/or RUNE, contact the RUNE Team in the Library.

Why is the H index not visible in Pure?

Pure  calculates the H index based on publications held in Pure.  While UNE is implementing some workarounds to get missing publications into RUNE and pre 2015 publications into Pure, we have switched off visibility of the H index on Pure Profiles. Once work is complete, we will turn on  the Pure H index and it will be visible on your profile. In the interim period you can use your H index listed on external sites such as Google Scholar.

Why aren't my Pure Awards showing on my Pure Profile?

Pure content type 'Awards' need to be transitioned to Pure content type 'Projects' in order to make them visible on Profiles i.e. Awards don't show on profiles, but Projects do. Some work has been completed to create Projects but further work needs to be undertaken to ensure Project information is complete and ready to appear on profiles. Research Services will be providing support to finalise this work over the next couple of months.

The Research Performance Team will reach out to work through your awards and projects for this purpose.

What data do I need to add to my Pure Profile?

UNE has identified preferred minimum data for a quality researcher profile. The minimum data includes a photo, bio, keywords, relevant sustainable development goals, fields of research and your email address.

There is other data that you can voluntarily enter into your profile. Simply work through the metadata screen when you click on 'Edit Profile' and add whatever information you wish.

Most importantly, you need to address the visibility of your profile i.e. if you don't mark it as 'Public - no restriction' in the visibility section, your  Pure Profile will not be visibile on the Pure Portal. You can correct this at any point in time.

What is the difference between the Pure Portal and Pure Profiles?

The Pure Portal is the web interface or landing page for Pure. The portal displays profiles, outputs, projects, activities etc (and any other content that UNE has switched on) so profiles are one component of the Portal.

I am a registered HDR supervisor at UNE. What information do I need to add?

The fact that you are on the UNE Register of Supervisors will be shared from the Graduate Research School to Research Services who will pre--populate this information to your Pure Profile on your behalf. You don't need to change this section of the Profile data as we will keep supervisor register information current on Pure Profiles on your behalf.

I want to recruit new HDR students. How do I promote those research projects?

Pure allows you to list the fact that you have capacity to take on new HDR students and it also provides you with the ability to list the projects you are trying to recruit students to. This can be, for example, a funded project name or alternatively it could be a broad research area.

How often do I need to update my Pure Profile?

UNE requests that you review your profile at least annually or when you have a new publication, grant or activity or if you are promoted or change roles etc. Your bio should be refreshed annually to keep it current. As new publications and awards/projects are made available in Pure, you can go in and link to other content types. Research Services will  include  regular reminders in the Research Newsletter.

When do I need to update my Profile for the current Portal go live in 2026?

The Pure portal will be visible on the external facing webpages at the end of April. If you want your profile to be visible at this point in time your data should be added or reviewed prior. If you are not able to update by this date, we recommend that you login to Pure and update your profile as soon as possible thereafter. Don't forget you also need to set visibility of your profile to Public - no restriction for it to appear on  the Pure Portal.

Who can have a Pure Profile?

For this initial project, UNE is firstly switching on the visibility of researchers with at least 5 publications since 2018. Other than this group the default visibility has not been changed. Honorary staff eg Adjuncts and Emeritus Professors will be the 2nd cohort that will be supported to develop Pure Profiles followed by Current HDR students.  Each cohort will be supported with direct communications providing instructions and links to resources.

What happens to my existing CMS Staff profile?

Existing staff profiles on the Squiz/CMS system will be pared back to contain contact details, photo and bio.  The CMS staff profiles are required in order to maintain CMS functionality across the University's website. Research Services will provide regular reports to the UNE Web Team to facilitate the creation, maintenance and archival of academic staff profiles. Researchers only need to maintain their Pure Profile. Your Pure Profile should not include a link back to the CMS staff profile. If you have a staff profile link in Pure, please delete it. We actually will operate it in reverse i.e. Research Services will provide your Pure Profile URL to the Web Team so that link can be added to your Squiz/CMS Staff Profile.

Do I have to make my Pure Profile Public?

No, you do not need to make your Pure profile public. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that might prevent you from wanting a public profile. However, researchers normally want to promote their research, in order to facilitate collaboration and attract new HDR students and one way to do that is to have a comprehensive and compelling researcher profile visible to the public.

Can I add additional information to my profile later?

Yes, you can add additional information into your profile at any point in time. We do request that you have the minimum data entered (photo, bio, keywords, FoR codes and  Sustainable Development Goals)  as a starting point and you can then make the profile visible. Subsequently you can go back  into your profile to add any other additional information you want to include  eg Education/Qualifications, external links eg LinkedIn, Scopus, professional and teaching information. You can also add HDR project information at anytime as well.

How do potential HDR students find my profile?

We highly recommend sharing/promoting your Pure Profile URL to help build traffic to the page.  This includes a recommendation to add your Pure Profile link in your email signature.

The Graduate Research School is also implementing the use of a QR code that will point to the Pure Portal.

Keywords and a well populated profile allow you to be easily 'searchable' so make the most of the data fields available to you in Pure. The Profiles User Guide provides helpful information about populating your profile in Pure. Further advice is available from the Research Performance Team in Research Services.

UNE will also make changes to existing pages within CMS to ensure web traffic is directed to the Pure Portal and profile pages.  The UNE Find an Expert functionality will also be configured to point to the Pure Portal.

Your Pure Profile should NOT include a link to your Staff profile in CMS. If you have that set up in Pure currently, we request that you remove it from Pure. Research Services will be providing Pure Profile URLs to the Web Team to prepopulate, on your behalf, to your CMS Staff profile page.

Trouble shooting

I've updated my profile data in Pure but my profile doesn't appear on the Portal

If you have updated your profile data and your profile is not appearing on the UNE Pure Portal you may have missed the visibility  settings in Pure. You will need to log back into Pure, click Edit Profile and on the metadata screen, scroll to the bottom to see the  visibility settings. Select 'Public - no restriction' and then click  on the blue Save button at the bottom of the screen. This should trigger visibility on the Portal.

I've uploaded a photo into Pure but it doesn't appear on my Pure profile

If you have uploaded a photo but it isn't appearing on your profile  there may be a couple if things to check:

a) the size and ratio of the photo

b)  did you select 'Portrait under type in the Image section of Pure?

Check the Profiles Userguide for details on image file size and dimenions and ratios.

I have publications in RUNE that are not appearing in Pure

If your publications are displaying in RUNE but are not showing in Pure there could be a number of reasons why this has happened. Each case will need to be investigated. We recommend that you email the RUNE Team in the library with the details of the specific outputs.

Pre 2015 publications (for current researchers) that are not held in RUNE, are going to be loaded into Pure by Research Services in the near future
