Department of Home Affairs

The Department of Home Affairs provides useful information on how universities can counter foreign interference, including The Guidelines to Counter Foreign Interference in the Australian University Sector which have been developed by the University Foreign Interference Taskforce (UFIT). These guidelines have been developed for, and in partnership with, the Australian university sector to help manage and engage with risk to deepen resilience against foreign interference in the university sector.

Department of Education

The Department of Education also works with Australia’s higher education and research sector to counter risks of foreign interference, and provides many useful resources, including:

• Case studies on due diligence, risks assessments and management

• Case studies on governance and risk frameworks

• Case studies on cybersecurity in relation to foreign interference

Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO)

ASIO has a particularly useful website about how researchers in Australia can collaborate with care. The “Protect your research” website also contains a booklet containing in-depth information about espionage and foreign interference in the context of research and academia, which academic staff at UNE are encouraged to review.
