Morgann Patterson
Pathways graduate and Current Bachelor of Psychological Science student
What is your background and what brought you to study at UNE?
I come from Dubbo in regional NSW and I moved to the Hunter region when I was a teenager. I have a love of DnD, craft and reading. I had an unfulfilled lifetime goal of obtaining a degree. I decided I wanted to study again, but I wasn't sure where to start, so I completed an aptitude test which recommended psychology. From there, a friend recommended UNE due to the high rating of student fulfillment, particularly for online studies.
What degree are you currently studying?
I am studying a Bachelor of Psychological Science (Counselling major) part-time online.
How did you feel starting the Pathways program?
My mindset was that Pathways was my stepping stone into university after 10 years away from formal studies. I felt excited and anxious to begin the course.
What did your family and friends think about you returning to study?
My friends and family have been very supportive of my return to education. They have been cheering me on and listening to me each step of the way. Their support has been critical in keeping me motivated and on track.
Did you study around work/life challenges?
I have always had to balance my studies around my full-time job and my family obligations. I wish I could afford to be a full-time student, but as a mature student I had to accept part-time study.
Were there any moments that made you doubt your ability to succeed? How did you handle these and stay motivated?
I have had multiple moments of doubt over my time studying. I remember feeling that I could not understand the content and therefore I would never achieve the marks I wanted from the unit. Luckily, UNE provided PASS [Peer Assisted Study Sessions] for this unit and the student mentor assigned was able to help me understand the unit, to have a dedicated study session each week and to best use my limited time and energies during my doubt. Additionally, my husband has always been my greatest supporter, with many kind and encouraging words.
What support people or systems have helped you the most during your studies?
PASS, ASO [Academic Skills Office] and Studiosity have helped me the most during my studies.
Was there a specific moment during your studies when you knew you were on the right path?
Yes! I remember during a social psychology unit seeing the content in real life during my job or social events. Being able to see examples of what I was learning, understand this and then later ask those people about the situation let me know I was headed in the right direction.
Do you think your life experience gave you a unique perspective or helped you succeed at uni?
I had one attempt at tertiary education right after high school but found myself not succeeding and going into the workforce full time. I have since completed three more certificates during my work experience. My time just out of high school was very different to when I returned as a mature student. Having been out in the world and the workforce gave me better tolerance, confidence and experience to tackle studies with a more rounded-out mindset.
Which achievements during your studies do you feel most proud of?
I am very proud of achieving an HD in biopsychology and being asked to join the PASS/PAM as a student leader because of my success and participation in my units. This has provided me the opportunity to stay refreshed on the content and to help others as I was helped.
Looking back, how do you feel about your studies so far?
I am very proud for never giving up, taking breaks when I needed to, and giving my best attempt each time. I feel confident that I will finish my degree and continue on my path.
What advice would you give to someone in a similar situation who’s thinking about going to uni later in life?
I would suggest that you start with the Pathways course. I cannot stress enough that starting in Pathways is the reason I am a high-achieving student. Pathways prepared me more for university than high school ever did. It taught me critical thinking, academic writing and set the expectations of university learning. You should always back yourself and never be afraid to ask the questions or ask for help.
Is there anything you’d like to add?
UNE has great support services such as the Wellness Centre, library and ASO. The support offered is there to be used and is a fantastic part of UNE.
