PASS@UNE - Peer Assisted Study Sessions

What is PASS?

PASS stands for Peer Assisted Study Sessions which are regularly scheduled, out-of-class study sessions where students learn together. Delivered mostly online, with some sessions on campus, PASS is an informal, collaborative space designed for all students. The sessions are hosted by trained PASS Leaders - experienced students who have successfully completed the unit and facilitate collaborative study. Whether you're looking to deepen your understanding, connect with your peers, or generally feel more part of the university community, PASS is the place to start!

PASS@UNE services are funded by NBF (Needs Based Funding).

About the sessions

During a session you will meet with your classmates and engage collaboratively with the unit material. PASS Leaders guide you through activities designed to enhance your study. They don't reteach the unit content, but explore it with you by asking questions, encouraging discussion, or practicing skills together. You'll also discover the range of academic support resources available to you – from the Academic Skills Office to the library and academic advisors – resources that Leaders have found valuable throughout their own studies.

One hour of focused study in PASS is often as effective as three hours of solo study, thanks to the collaborative, active learning environment.

How can I participate?

PASS sessions are open to all students within the supported units and are attended on a voluntary basis. These sessions are all delivered through Zoom, allowing you to join from any location, with select sessions also running on campus (ON). Look for the PASS logo on your unit's myLearn Home page.

When and how are PASS sessions held?

Visit the PASS MyLearn site to view the sessions available for your units. PASS@UNE sessions run weekly throughout the trimester, and you can attend as many sessions as you like. Many units offer two PASS@UNE sessions each week.

PASS@UNE sessions take place using Zoom and are accessed through the PASS@UNE MyLearn site. All students who are part of these units automatically have access to the PASS@UNE MyLearn site.

What do you need for a PASS session?
  • A computer/device to access the Zoom sessions
  • Pen and paper to write any notes and tips
  • Relevant unit resources e.g., textbook, readings. It’s ok if you don’t have this handy, you can still join in!
Why should you attend PASS@UNE?
  • PASS sessions are available to you, no matter of your location because they are held via Zoom (some sessions are offered in a hybrid mode with on campus and online students working together).
  • PASS can help you to feel less isolated in your studies.
  • Our sessions are designed to be informal and flexible, giving you the opportunity to contribute in a way that suits you.
  • It's a chance to connect with other students in your course and the UNE community.
  • Sessions are led by current UNE students, who have studied the subject previously.
  • PASS@UNE is not just for students who feel like they are struggling. PASS@UNE is also for students who want to get the most out of their studies and build a network of support with other students.
