The University of New England, School of Law in collaboration with the Criminology discipline, invites you to a conference that will provide a rich and diverse program with country hospitality that is just a little different from most conferences. The purpose of the conference is to examine the efficacy of current laws and policy relating to rural crime and the criminal justice response to identify what works and what does not, where the gaps exist between the law and community expectations, and seek ways to improve practice by all stakeholders in rural Australia. Who should attend
This conference will be of particular interest to academics, police, lawyers, magistrates, environmentalists, community leaders, government agencies and policy-makers as well as farmers, irrigators, agribusiness, and mining company representatives. We envisage a vibrant discussion focusing on laws concerning property rights around trespass, illegal hunting, mining rights, water rights, Indigenous rights, environmental laws and regulation, firearm regulations, biosecurity, and the challenges for the criminal justice system operating within rural areas.
Call for papers
Proposals for sessions and abstracts (max 250 words) are invited for individual papers (20 mins) or panels on any aspects of relevance to four key themes. Theme one: rural crime as offences against pastoral, agricultural and aquaculture industries; theme two: issues around the policing of rural crime; theme three: laws, policy and practice relating to rural crime, including the legal and criminal justice response in prosecuting and punishing offenders; and theme four: a criminological approach to considering the social context in which various social and crime problems occur within rural communities in Australia.

Papers presented at the conference also have the opportunity for publication within a special issue of the International Journal of Rural Law and Policy on rural crime. Delegates wishing to have their paper considered for this special edition are asked to provide an extended abstract of 1500 words by 15th November 2018 to Dr Same Varayudeji. Full manuscripts will be due for submission via the journal website, by 15th January 2019.
