Oorala Experience Program FAQs

Who should attend?

The program is aimed at high school students in years 10-12.

We ask that schools select students they believe could benefit most from participating in this

How many days should we attend?

As many or as few as you need. You will be required to make a booking and select the dates your school group will be attending.

The program is held across 5 days, however the academic sessions will be conducted on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Monday and Friday are considered travel days for those who aren’t located in the Armidale region. Whist you have the choice to attend individual days, we do recommend participation across the whole program.

Do our teaching staff need to attend to supervise students?

Yes. Students will need adult supervision in accordance with the Department of Education and school policies for school excursions. If your school is only sending one student, the student may be accompanied by their parent or carer instead. Supervision is the responsibility of the school to organise.

What is the limit on how many students a school can bring?

There is no limit on how many students can attend.

If you anticipate a large group, please let us know so we are able to make additional arrangements if needed.

Are there any activities planned for the evening?

Yes, there are.

This will generally include dinner and social activities such as movie nights, trivia nights, college dinners, food truck dinner night, etc. These will be organised at college and in town. We will have a select group of staff, student ambassadors, and college leaders in attendance each night.

Can Oorala & UNE assist with the costs of attending?

Yes! We can assist with the following expenses to attend the program:

Travel
Fuel, public transport, and private transport costs will be reimbursed or paid for prior to departure. Please liaise with the team at Oorala to make your arrangements as early as possible.

Accommodation
Participants will be staying at a campus college.

Meals
All meals will be provided during your time on campus.

What do students need to bring?
  • Comfortable clothing with enclosed footwear for daily activities. Please pack according to weather forecasts as it can still be quite cold at this time of year.
  • Activewear for students participating in sports sessions.
  • Toiletries and Medication (as required).
What should I know about staying at college?

Active Campus

Your visit to UNE may fall within an active trimester. This means that there will be current residents of the college during your stay. However, Experience Program guests will be housed separately to current students (floors/blocks).

Secure Rooms

Students will have their own lockable room (includes all bedding).

Communal Facilities

Bathrooms are communal and include several toilet and shower cubicles. Students should be prepared to share these facilities with other Experience Day participants as this is the typical University experience. If schools or individuals have concerns with this arrangement, please advise the planning team prior to arriving.

Are you a dog person?

The college is also home to two friendly rescue dogs. If you are not a dog person, or maybe you have fears or allergies, it’s important to let us know.
