Multi-Factor Authentication for Students

Microsoft Authenticator Multi-Factor Authentication

The University of New England (UNE) requires Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) as a second layer of security for your online accounts. Verifying your identity using a second factor (like your phone or other mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password. You will have already had similar experiences when using myGov, Apple ID, Google account and banking apps.

Rollout Progress

UNE has commenced the MFA rollout to the students at the University. MFA will be rolled out to students gradually in tranches, and you will receive an email from UNE with all relevant information prior to your account becoming MFA-enabled. If you haven't received an email yet regarding enrolment, no need to worry, the rollout just hasn't reached your tranche yet.

How It Works

UNE has selected the Microsoft Authenticator service as the preferred service for MFA for students. When you log into an application that is enabled for MFA, you will need to respond to confirm the login on your Microsoft Authenticator mobile application.

  1. Enter your UNE email address and password as usual.
  2. Use your phone to verify the login attempt.
  3. You have now securely logged in.

UNE + Microsoft Authenticator = secured account

MFA alternatives

Alternatively for MFA, you may:

  • A hardware token/Yubikey to complete MFA authentication.
  • Use a third-party authenticator application. However, the UNE IT Support team cannot assist or support third-party applications.
  • Install the Authenticator app on a tablet such as an iPad.
