Transitional arrangements

All previously completed units will count towards your degree. The overall number of required credit points for the LLB component of your degree course, ie, 144 cp, remains unchanged. In some cases, adjustments might need to be made to the number of listed Law units you are required to complete to accommodate the new course rules.

Contracts

Students who have completed LAW171 should do LAW272 (Law of Contract II) in 2020. LAW272 will not be offered after 2020. Students are advised that LAW171 is not accreditation compliant for contract law on its own. If students who have already done LAW171 miss LAW272 in 2020, they will need to take the new contracts law unit (LAW172).

Students enrolled in LAW171 in Trimester 3 2019 are affected by this arrangement. Students should consider whether to remain enrolled in LAW171 and take LAW272 in 2020 or withdraw and take LAW172 in 2020 (or beyond) instead.

Torts Law

Students who have completed LAW231 should do LAW232 (Law of Torts II) in 2020. LAW232 will not be offered after 2020. Students are advised that LAW231 is not accreditation compliant for torts law on its own. If students who have already done LAW231 miss LAW232 in 2020, they will need to take the new torts law unit (LAW131).

Property Law

Students who have completed LAW281 should do LAW282 (Law of Property II) in 2020. LAW282 will not be offered after 2020. Students are advised that LAW281 is not accreditation compliant for property law on its own. If students who have already done LAW281 miss LAW282 in 2020, they will need to take the new property law unit (LAW283).

Criminal law and criminal procedure

Students who have completed LAW161 should do LAW312 (Criminal and Civil Procedure) in 2020. LAW312 will not be offered after 2020. Students are advised that LAW161 is not accreditation compliant for criminal law and criminal procedure on its own. If students who have already done LAW161 miss LAW312 in 2020, they will need to take the new criminal law unit (LAW162), which includes the required Priestley criminal procedure content.

Students enrolled in LAW161 in Trimester 3 2019 are affected by this arrangement. Students should consider whether to remain enrolled in LAW161 and take LAW312 in 2020 or withdraw and take LAW162 in 2020 (or beyond) instead.

Students are advised that the prerequisites for LAW312 include contract law (LAW171) and torts (LAW231 or LAW131). If students will not have completed contract law and torts prior to trimester 2 2020, they should give serious consideration to withdrawing from LAW161 in trimester 3 2019.

Civil Procedure / Civil Dispute Resolution

All students must complete either LAW312 Criminal and Civil Procedure or LAW310, Civil Dispute Resolution, during the course of their degrees. We recommend that students only take LAW312 in 2020 if students have already done (ie, 2019 or earlier) LAW161 Criminal Law.

LAW102 Legal Professional Skills

LAW102 is only a mandatory core unit for students commencing in 2020 and beyond. Subject to degree rules about the permissible number of level-100 units, existing students are able to enrol, taking the unit as a listed LAW elective.

LAW499 Technology and the Law

LAW499 is only a mandatory core unit for students commencing in 2020 and beyond. Existing students are able to enrol, taking the unit as a listed elective.

LAW455 Jurisprudence

LAW455 Jurisprudence is removed as a core unit for students commencing in 2020 and beyond. If students have not yet completed LAW455 and did not wish to do so, they can enrol instead in LAW499, Technology and the Law.

Corporations Law & Constitutional Law

LAW251, Corporations Law now has a new unit code, LAW351. If students have completed LAW251 they will not be required to do LAW351.

LAW220, Constitutional Law now has a new unit code, LAW399. If students have completed LAW220 they will not be required to do LAW399.

LAW100 and LAW480

LAW100, currently entitled Introduction to Legal Systems and Methods, is renamed, Foundations of Law. Students who have completed LAW100 will not be required to redo the unit.
