Copying broadcast material

Broadcast material that can be copied in reliance of the Educational Statutory Licence includes television and radio material, as well as content of a broadcast made available online (such as SBS On Demand) as long as the content was originally broadcast at the same time, or earlier.

Recordings from TV or radio
  • there are no specific copying limits under the Educational Statutory Licence for broadcasts as long as you are using the content for educational purposes, and in line with the conditions of the licence. You are able to reproduce any quantity and any part, including advertisements and entire movies and songs
  • broadcast material can be taped from broadcast TV or radio, or reproduced by a Resource Centre
  • broadcast material can be communicated using Reading List or myLearn
  • you should provide information about the program. Where possible, provide details of the channel, presenters, performers, title information and credits as well as the date it was broadcast
  • before viewing the material, students must first view a copyright warning notice
What is not covered under the licence
  • content that has been purchased as a commercial DVD or video
  • online videos e.g. YouTube, Vimeo
  • subscription video on demand services e.g. Netflix, Stan
  • content that has not been previously broadcast e.g. ABC iView podcast that originated online, and has never been broadcast on TV or radio
