It's December and the annual work party season is well under way. But what does this ritual look like – and feel like – in this year of social distancing? And is getting together at year's end still important?
Dr Suzie Cosh, a lecturer in Clinical Psychology at UNE, dons her party hat to reflect on its importance in workplaces and teams.
"This year's office Christmas party will almost certainly look different to previous years, but I think it's more important than ever that workplaces host one this year for the sake of relationships and general morale," Suzie says.
"The staff party is a time for people to come together, celebrate what they have achieved and enjoy some social time. It's an occasion for employees to take pause and a chance for employers to give back - it's a gesture of goodwill."
Across many industries, those who have maintained their jobs are likely to have worked harder under more difficult circumstances in 2020, and Suzie says many workers have become disconnected from their colleagues.
"Teams have become very fractured this year and many people are still working from home," she says. "The Christmas party is a great opportunity to bring everyone together, including those who may have left the organisation.
"There hasn't always been an opportunity to say goodbye to those who have left. The Christmas party is a good way to keep connections alive, and to show staff that they are valued and appreciated, as people. It contributes to staff wellbeing and keeps staff engaged."
Suzie believes that hosting an end-of-year or Christmas party sends a powerful message. "It gives staff something to look forward to, boosts their spirits and enables staff to show support for one another," she said.
We've realised this year, when it was taken away, how much we rely on our co-workers and how important those relationships are in our lives.
So what is Suzie planning for her team's end-of-year celebration?
"Following social distancing rules, of course, we'll probably look to have a low-key lunch at a pub and spread everyone out on bigger tables," she said. "Some staff will 'attend' via Zoom, so I'm planning on some games and even a quiz, to foster interaction. This is the year when everybody needs to reconnect and have a bit of fun."
