3 essentials to balancing study, life and work

Published 01 May 2019

Getting the right balance between study, work and life can be tricky to navigate. Time spent studying can easily take away from your work, family and social life – and vice versa. Ahead of his seminar for on campus students at UNE, mental health advocate, Nick Bracks, shares his top three tips for ensuring you get the most out of your studies and life as an online student.

1. Create good habits

Nick recommends to set out your days or weeks using a schedule. “Have set times. For example, have two hours every day at a certain time where you study and have set times where you socialise.” Creating these sorts of habits and working them in to your daily life schedule will ensure you can visualise how you will spend your time, as well as ensure that you spend enough time on each aspect of your life.

2. Exercise

“Try to do some form of movement or exercise on a daily basis,” Nick recommends. “That could be going for a run, going to the gym, going for a walk.” Whatever form of exercise you choose, Nick explains that movement is extremely important to include in your daily routine around work and study, as it allows you a chance to get out of the study or work mindset and gain clarity.

3. Surround yourself with support

“Make sure that you have really good, supportive people around you – people that are going to encourage you to push yourself to get the results that you need, and offer you support.”

Nick’s free seminar, ‘Managing Study/Life Balance’ is all about discovering ways to manage stress, deal with anxiety and depression and positively charge your mental health to get the best out of your every day and your studies. The seminar will be held on Friday 3 May 2019 from 10.30am-1.00pm in the Arts Lecture Theatre 2. Register here.
