TRACKS at UNE: A flexible, culturally safe pathway for Trimester 3
TRACKS is UNE’s tertiary preparation program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. It supports you to build core academic skills, grow confidence, and transition smoothly into undergraduate study, all within a culturally safe community through the Oorala Aboriginal Centre.
TRACKS teacher and UNE alum, Dr Vanessa Sewell, brings a unique blend of research, teaching, and community engagement. Vanessa studied Animal Science at UNE, completed an Honours year in Armidale, and went on to a PhD in Molecular Biology and Parasitology that focused on sheep vaccines. While working at Oorala she discovered a passion for teaching and student support.
“I found immense reward in teaching within the TRACKS program, helping students navigate their journey into university and achieve their career aspirations,” Vanessa says. “My goal is to bridge the gap by connecting Western science with traditional Indigenous knowledge systems and to inspire the next generation of Aboriginal scientists and innovators.”
What is TRACKS
TRACKS is a comprehensive pathway, not just a set of units. You will develop planning, critical thinking, academic integrity, and research skills, and learn how to communicate effectively in a university setting. “TRACKS helps students gain foundational academic skills, develop effective study techniques, and build confidence in a university setting,” Vanessa explains.
Units include:
- TRAX003 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities
- TRAX002 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies
- TRAX006 Information and Communication Technology in Higher Education
You will study in a supportive environment that includes onboarding, at risk tracking, guidance into undergraduate pathways, and orientation activities. Ongoing community engagement includes the Ronyera Ekina Program for Indigenous high school students. TRACKS units have no HECS debt.
Why Trimester 3 suits TRACKS
Trimester 3 offers flexibility and focus, especially for online learners. You can start sooner, transition into undergraduate study earlier, and build confidence before the new academic year. Smaller cohorts can mean more individualised support and a clearer study rhythm that fits work and family.
“Trimester 3 provides the ultimate flexibility to fit learning around existing commitments,” Vanessa says. “It is an excellent opportunity to get comfortable with university platforms and expectations.”
Enrolment deadline: 10 October.
Teaching that meets you where you are
Vanessa teaches with a practical, skills first approach, supported by engaging learning activities. She also contributes to strategic planning for the Student Experience Team to ensure every step of your journey is supported. Vanessa teaches OORA200 and OORA400, a culturally responsive unit that helps students engage effectively with Aboriginal people. “Many people are keen to learn about cultural responsiveness, they often need help to apply it meaningfully,” she says.
Who should consider TRACKS
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who want a clear pathway into UNE
- Learners returning to study who want to build confidence with online tools
- Students curious about STEM, social sciences, or interdisciplinary fields
- Anyone who values a culturally safe and supportive community
Vanessa’s advice: “Pursue what genuinely ignites your passion. Do not be afraid to explore interdisciplinary fields. Often the most innovative solutions emerge at the intersection of different knowledge systems.”
