As international protests continue over the tragic death of 22-year-old Iranian woman, Masha Amini, the University of New England (UNE) stands in solidarity with the people of Iran.
Ms Amini suffered a fatal stroke after she was detained by the Iranian morality police for incorrectly wearing a hijab on the 13th September. We are deeply saddened by the growing number civilians and peaceful protesters who have lost their lives in retaliation to the incident, and the University extends its support to students, staff, alumni and members of the wider community who have been affected. UNE condemns the violence and brutality being displayed, and strongly believes in protecting the basic freedoms and human rights that are being challenged at this time.
As a multicultural university, it is of utmost importance that our Iranian students, alumni, staff, and their families, friends and loved ones are offered the appropriate support and assistance. As always, the safety and wellbeing of our UNE community is paramount.
If you are a student, the UNE Wellness Centre has a number of resources to help you get through this difficult time. You can book a 30-minute wellness check-in with our UNE Counselling & Psychological Services team, or, if you need to talk to someone immediately, you can call them on 02 6773 2897 between 9am and 4pm on weekdays. If you need to talk to someone outside of business hours, you can contact the UNE Mental Health Support line on 1300 661 927 or send a text message to 0488 884 169. If your ability to study has been impacted, we encourage you to book a call with one of our Student Engagement Officers to discuss how we can best support you.
UNE stands with the people and institutions around the world who are speaking out about this blatant disregard for human rights.
Please continue to look out for your colleagues, friends and loved ones, and do not hesitate to reach out for support if you need it
