S&T Technical Resources

The School of Science and Technology provides technical resources to support teaching and research in the School and Faculty.

School technical resources include staff, facilities and equipment.

The deployment of School resources is controlled by the Head of School and the School Technical Manager.

This site provides information about the resources available and guidelines about how to access them.

Staff

School technical staff provide support for teaching and research within a flexible Discipline based model. Staff are located with the disciplines of Biomedical Science, Chemistry and Physics, and Sport and Exercise Science. While staff priorities are discipline specific by default individual staff members make contributions across the School and Faculty. Staff deployment is guided by School and Faculty needs and outcomes.

Our Technical Staff

Facilities

A range of teaching and research facilities are available to Science and Technology staff. Teaching spaces are booked centrally and are generally available to all University staff for teaching activities. School technical staff exercise some control over the use of teaching laboratories matching teaching activities to the most suitable spaces. Research space is allocated by the Head of School and the School Technical Manager.

For further information on School facilities please contact Daniel Ebert, Technical Manager

Equipment

Teaching and research equipment is provided by the faculty and controlled by School academic and technical staff with the oversight of the School Technical Manager. Teaching equipment is generally available to any School staff member for teaching activities. Access to and use of all items of equipment is subject to approval of the Head of School and School Technical Manager.

Please note that systems of operation around School equipment are under development as of Q1 2023. Information at the following link is conditional and under review. For information on equipment, please contact Daniel Ebert, Technical Manager.

Access

School technical resources may be accessed in two modes. Routine and minor use of resources, for example consulting with staff on an issue that can be resolved quickly or routine use of space and equipment does not require explicit approval from Head of School or the School Technical Manager. Any substantial use of resources must be approved by either the Head of School or School Technical Manager.

Examples of routine and minor use of resources

  • Brief one-off consultation with staff - <1hr.
  • Training of students and staff in the operation of an instrument where that training is basic and brief.
  • Use of an instrument by a trained and approved user where that use is reserved via the School equipment booking system (TBD).
  • Staff support of scheduled undergraduate practical classes, not including activity development work.
  • Fulfillment of requests approved through formal School technical requests system (follow link below).

Examples of resource use that requires approval

  • Substantial consultation with staff -  >1hr.
  • Training of students and staff in the operation of instrumentation where that training is substantial, e.g. occuring over multiple hours or sessions.
  • Supervision of HDR students.
  • Any non-trivial contribution to research, including HDR projects.
  • Assignment of staff to undergraduate units for the purpose of practical class support.
