Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of the rationale for blending wool at various processing stages (before scouring, after scouring before carding, carded slivers through gilling, and throughout the processing line), relating blending strategies to fleece characteristics and processing requirements;
2. demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of the fundamental processes and systems involved in preparing raw wool (scouring and carbonising to remove greasy wool impurities and contaminants) and the three main processing routes of wool yarn manufacture (worsted, woollen and semi-worsted);
3. explain and critically analyse the attributes of yarn, the importance of twist and the multi-stage process of spinning, demonstrating the ability to critically reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories;
4. demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of the relationship between fleece characteristics, wool handling and classing practices, and processing outcomes, including the effect of fibre properties determined during wool production on processing performance and fabric quality, and evaluate the latest developments in wool processing technology for producing fabrics that match customer requirements;
5. evaluate the main techniques and procedures for spinning, weaving, knitting, finishing, non-woven and carpet manufacture, demonstrating ability to interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences; and
6. critically review and evaluate current literature on the latest research in wool processing, demonstrating ability to undertake research and apply established theories to the body of knowledge connecting wool production, fleece quality, and processing outcomes.
