Unit information
Australia’s poultry industry is a significant contributor to the economy, particularly in rural and regional areas. Ensure that you are equipped to thrive in this growing area with the skills and knowledge of poultry production.
Studying this unit, you will develop in-depth understanding of key scientific and production principles in the poultry meat and egg industry, including genetics, management, anatomy and physiology, health and product quality.
In this unit you will also gain knowledge about how the industry is structured, contemporary management processes, housing and environmental requirements and breeding systems. This unit will provide you with the background and skills to problem solve in response to the complex challenges you may encounter in this industry.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- assess poultry production systems in relation to bird health, welfare, and productivity;
- interpret evidence from literature in relation to the nutrition, health, biosecurity, and management requirements of poultry production systems;
- evaluate housing and environmental management strategies in poultry production in relation to bird welfare, health, disease risk, and production outcomes; and
- communicate knowledge of aspects in poultry production and practices in written or verbal forms, using evidence to support discussion of production, health and management.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.
