Unit information
As the world’s largest exporter of certain minerals and a major oil producer, Australia is undoubtedly rich in natural resources. Moreover, activities relating to the use, planning and conservation of natural resources are subject to legal rules of national and international law.
The significance of these legal issues extends beyond the limit of legal technicalities to areas such as politics, Indigenous peoples’ rights, the environment and even human rights.
This unit introduces you to the principles of natural resources law, discussing Australian law from the perspective of both national and state jurisdiction, and the relevant international law relating to different legal aspects of natural resources. You will gain a thorough introduction to a range of topics including the international law of natural resources, water resources, fisheries, minerals, soil resources and forests. Throughout, you will build transferable critical thinking, legal reasoning and analytical skills to future fit your career.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate specialist and advanced understanding of the nature and scope of the law and the role of the courts and tribunals in dealing with matters that relate to natural resources matters;
- use initiative and judgement to analyse critically, synthesise and consolidate legal concepts, values and rules of natural resource law to construct persuasive legal arguments, using relevant statutes and case law statements, in discussing contemporary natural resource issues including solutions to fact based problems and evaluating the processes that contributed to the development of current natural resources law; and
- use cognitive and creative skills to access both domestic and international sources, employing the skills of legal research techniques, reasoning and argument, to develop and coherently communicate independent opinions on legal issues relevant to natural resource matters and consider future approaches and assessments on the development of natural resources law.
